In this article I will share with you my experience of growing a beard and how second time round I prevented the dreaded beard itch from being unbearable.
Before I start though, there is always a certain amount of itch apparently up to around three to four weeks of beard hair growth but a lot of discomfort can be prevented.
Read on to find out how I stopped my beard itching so much or search more here.
Firstly, a little background to this beard growing story.
At the age of 48 I thought to myself; “You know what, I’m going to grow a beard!”.
As I had never grown one before I wanted to know what it looked like. I knew it would be kind of grey due to the way the hair on my head was going!
I guess like most men who are looking to grow their first beard, I watched a number of YouTube tutorial videos on growing a beard and read a load of stuff online on the best way to help grow a healthy beard.
The first time I tried to grow my beard out, I gave up after 6 weeks. I followed some advice by adding beard oil daily and this and that, it made my beard feel like a caked on mess if I am honest. I shaved it all off. Major fail.
About a month later I thought, I must have be doing something really wrong first time round, so I went for it again but with a different game plan!
How I Prevented an Itchy Beard
The second time of growing a beard, in the early stages, I asked around some friends with beards what their experience was of growing a beard. I was interested to know how they prevented an itchy beard as well as their beard grooming routine.
I was surprised what I heard. Completely different to what I watched and read online.
I took their advice and I could not believe the difference from the first time I tried growing a beard to the second.
Here is what I did to stop my beard from itching as much.
- I bought some sensitive skin Facial Wash which is designed to combat and help with irritable skin
- Each evening I wet my face with luke warm water, plenty of it too
- I applied a small amount of facial wash onto my hands then lathered it up into my beard and massaged the skin and beard hairs
- I left it in for a few minutes then rinsed the wash out with plenty of clean luke warm water – not hot and not cold
- To dry my beard I just gently patted the hairs with a towel
That is it. A quick daily wash is the way forward with sensitive skin face wash.
I haven’t bought any beard oil or special beard shampoo at all. Just the face wash.
What I have learnt is that you should not use hot water on your beard as this will dry the hairs out. Do not use normal shampoo or soap either due to the chemical ingredients may strip the beard hairs of their natural oils.
A healthy diet, drinking plenty of water (approx 2 litres a day) and a good nights rest will all help you grow a healthy beard apparently.
I am no expert by any means but my beard doesn’t itch hardly at all by just using facial wash only.
I hope this helps.
